A fiery tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 95 in Caroline County closed the southbound lanes all day on Oct. 24, 2024.

Interstate 95 south reopened in Caroline County late Thursday, about 16 hours after a fiery tractor-trailer crash damaged the highway.

At 10:20 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation announced that repairs were complete following the 6:30 a.m. crash at mile marker 108.

The crash and fire damaged more than 150 feet of roadway in the left and center southbound travel lanes, VDOT said in a news release.

"Crews have finished milling the damaged pavement and will next apply fresh asphalt and pavement markings," the agency said around 6:30 p.m.

State police told WWBT 12 News in Richmond that one person suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the tractor-trailer was merging from the rest area onto Interstate 95 when it collided with the trash truck, causing a chain reaction style crash with three additional vehicles. This impact led to a fire involving the vehicles,” state police said.

Posed speed limit is 70 mph, and not generally adhered to. I see autos and SUVs racing and large trucks and RV motor homes entering from the rest stop and I 95 exits at slow speed. Hardly ever see the State Police in this area of I-95.

What a MESS !!! Many thousands have been and will be significantly delayed. Where were the State Police and USDOT Transportation Safety? Reckless driving is so common on this stretch of I-95 as to be usual. I see HAZMAT tanker trucks driving well over the speed limit. Time for Major League enforcement actions by the State Police and USDOT is long overdue.
