Police say a 21-year-old man was traveling twice the speed limit when he lost control of his car and died in a fiery Dec. 20 crash in the Manassas area.

Officers were called to the single-vehicle wreck at Lake Jackson and Blandsford drives at 11:51 p.m., Prince William County police Master Officer Renee Carr said in a news release.

"The investigation revealed the driver of a 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI was traveling northbound on Lake Jackson Drive when the vehicle veered to the right and left the roadway," Carr said.

The car then continued into a field where it struck a utility pole, causing the vehicle to flip over several times and eventually catch fire.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Ian Rambert of Manassas, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No additional vehicles were involved in the crash.

On Monday, police released an update on the case, saying the driver was traveling more than double the 35 mph speed limit at the time of the wreck.

Crash investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact police.

ReEducated Parrot

How many people will die on this road? Should of had guardrails 40 years ago.

Twice the speed limit....No seat belt...Sorry ReEducated...No. Sorry he died...but he made the choice...Call me cold hearted...your right.....I AM.... When I see young kids battling cancer, child abuse, so many other god wrenching issues...we spend our money on them. not some 21 year old who knew better.

Oh...just so you know...I do know the road...sorry to blow that defense out of the water for you.

Was still an ignorant comment. I know what you are saying but he did not deserve to die. Safety upgrades are made all the time on roads showing the need and justification. I lived off Lake Jackson Rd for over 30 years. Not a road for the faint of heart in rain, snow, ice and so on. Yes, he was very negligent in his driving and there is a good chance guard rails would not have prevented his death. But we'll never know now and apparently you feel he deserved what he got.
